Movie Review (OMG-2)

There are so many movies that question the vices of the society. Akshay Kumar starrer OMG-2 (2023), stands out unique from such movies with its perfect blend of screenplay, characterization and impactful dialogues.

Being a sequel to OMG-1(2012) that questions the religious practices, this movie focuses on yet another, often tabooed area - Sex education. Parents even shudder at the very thought of discussing  sex and related concepts in front of their tweens and teens but they ignore the simple fact that the media and peer groups are flooded with the same. It is true that half knowledge is dangerous. With their partially gained knowledge from social media and other sources, the youngsters are misled even manipulated.

Kanti Sharan Mudgal (Pankaj Tripathi), an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, is a man of austerity. He runs a shop in Mahakaal's temple. His simple and content life comes to a standstill when his son Vivek's video (of practising onanism in the school toilet) goes viral. Through Vivek's friend he later learns that his son was made to believe that he could improve his boyish features by practising onanism. Before he can do something, the school rusticates the boy, to escape unwanted blame and shame. The video spreads like a wild fire and makes Vivek, a talk of the town.

His nosy neighbours, distressed family members and his self doubt taunt him every passing minute. Being a worried father, Kanti seeks refuge in Lord Mahakaal. He orders one of his shivghans - Akshay Kumar to go in aid of him.

Akshay who facades himself as an eccentric wanderer, gives him indirect hints to tackle the problem. Kranti realises that his son and the entire family suffer because of his insufficient parenting and the education system that failed to give his son the knowledge of his own body. With this new realisation and his faith in God, he sues the school and the related people who tricked his son to believe in their fake medications. When his lawyer steps back, he chimes in as his own lawyer and the movie unfolds how he wins the case against Mrs.Kamini, the unscrupulously skilful lawyer of opposition and draws justice for his son.

Besides an excellent screenplay and a strong message, the movie also gives us goosebumps with its songs. When "Oonche oonche wadi mein..." is comforting, "Har har Mahadev.." is scintillating. Also the sound track gives the vibes of Lord Shiva -- pairing Damru's beat with a passing bull.

A drama movie transforms into a  well scripted courtroom drama in the later half when Kranti begins to advocate his own case. with his each point, he bashes the education system and the society for making the students ignorant of their own physique. Though it seems illogical to see an untrained person giving back to back to a renowned lawyer like Mrs.Kamini, it can be justified as a result of divine interference. At places Kanti's innocence gives rice to peels of laughters backed with the Judge's (Pavan Malhotra) matchless performance.  The movie reaches his culmination when Vivek shows up to the court and asks who will teach the teens, the basics like sexually transmitted diseases, etc., That spurs the teens in the crowd to ask "We want sex education".

In my opinion, even if the movie has been given an "A", it has to be watched by all age groups. Atleast to understand that Masterbation is not a sin! and Sex education is not to spoil the young minds but to streamline them in a right path!
