On the day of a colleague's marriage (part-5)

When I noticed it was already 8:45pm. I was reminded that I had some preparation works and a score of papers to be evaluated. Though it was a Saturday eve, I couldn't put the work off as the next day would be a gala day. So,  leaving everything behind, I dived deep into the heap and that in turn kept me engaged for another hour.  

When I was halfway through the preparation, my mobile buzzed. As a good stroke of luck, it was kani bro. Before I could ask anything, he went on instructing me to wait near hotel Mayas and assured that he would pick me from there. I felt awe. With a satisfied, "Okay, brovvv!!!!" I hung up. However I was thankful that he didn't mock me (as usual) for having rejected his offer and being strayed. 

With a great anticipation for the next day, I went to bed, after texting Raksha's mom about the timing and other stuff. It was a long night. I couldn't get a wink of sleep, tossing and turning. 

The next day dawned to the tone of my alarm. With a great rush I woke up and got ready. It was half past eight when I reached Mayas. From there they said it would be a matter of some minutes to reach the wedding hall. Believing that we started on time. 

But to our annoyance, the vehicles moved in a snail's pace, it was a bumper to bumper traffic, due to some bridge construction work which I hardly remember now. The usually hurtling bike was cruising helplessly, under the scorching sun, and dusty wind gusts. It tested kani bro's patience. Bearing with the brunt of these hurdles, we proceeded further. Before we could reach the hall I was informed that I had to handover the cash envelope to the bride. Hence my mama was waiting there in the wedding hall. 

The plan was to reach the hall at least within half an hour of the wedding. As we couldn't reach on time, my mama got held up there. And the fellow friends had rung me numerous times perhaps to track us. Finally after what seemed to be an eternity, we reached the hall, all drained. 

When kani bro was parking his bike, I saw...

Visiting mom's place after a while is a sheer privilege. As I had been away for more than half a year, I received nothing short of a royal treatment— Sweets, snacks, drinks and beverages were served in regular intervals,  as if it would be a sin to leave even an inch of my tummy empty. My dad and mom were so much into the task that my ever-elongating tummy went on a strike and put up an invisible "houseful" board. With that mind numbing feed, I couldn't help but battle with drowsiness. To stay awake,  I was combing through my shelf for some new stuffs. There was a book that  caught my attention. It  was kept precariously on top of my neatly arranged files and folders.  When I pulled it out, a bookmark fell down to my feet. Tuesday morning dawned as always with us rushing to the auditorium with notepads / laptops. As I barged in, I saw teachers clustered section wise to discuss how to go about practising for the Teachers' day program. While walking through various clusters, I happened to overhear the "Assam" team discussing rigorously on what to wear.  Back in our section, the discussion was rather heated. Amidst the chaos, I was called. "Maha, we are staging a dance. Come. Join us!", said the event coordinator. Before it could sink in, I was dragged to the rehearsal spot where a dozen more teachers had already been waiting. Being a newbie, I couldn't gather myself to say "NO". So, out of FOMO , I nodded my head, wishing badly to be rejected.  The other teachers in the room were filled with josh and vigour.
